I currently have an HP Pavilion dv6 and am looking into upgrading my laptop. I just was wondering if any of you have any extra info for me as to what would be a good laptop for working int he film industry. I will be doing film editing, voice over editing, script writing and possibly (but not necessary) some gaming from it.
I've been recommended Alienware (which i know is built for gaming) for the fact that it would be able to handle anything I could throw at it and it would last awhile. I've also been recommended a MacBook except I'm told that with pc's now you can get any brand to do the same work as a Macbook.
Any info would be much appreciated.

well, first of all, it's a good thing you're getting rid of that piece of junk that's a HP laptop.
HP is known for their business class computers but their consumer grade products are complete and utter trash.
When you look for a laptop, keep in mind that it will never match the performance you will get from a desktop system and that you should always have a proper notebook cooler to go with that laptop when you're doing serious work.
The second part is to be aware of gpus. The new nvidia kepler cards have pretty much been crippled when it comes to computations. If you plan to do transcoding and anything that makes use of CUDA, you would be better off going for the 5xx series nvidia cards.
Lastly, look for atleast an i7 core cpu since you want hyperthreading and quad core.

the macbooks (the fancy new one with "retina" display) are essentially "up to par" with the rest of the industry BUT comes with a mid grade kepler card (650m) so don't expect much longelivity in the gaming side.

If you really want a fully fledged system, you should be building your own desktop. You'll come in cheaper and with much more power.
but if you have to get a laptop, consider my suggestions about what to look for.

and yeah, retina display is a worthless thing to base your purchase on. it doesn't matter how pixel dense your screen is at 15". It won't matter either if your apps are "retina capable" which is another gimmick marketing bs that they try to make as if softwares can't handle higher resolutions.

P.s: please do not post the same exact post in multiple forums. Read the rules for the forum again and follow it.

Clearly the Alienware will have a better graphics card. But, there are a lot of flaws with alienware vs. Macbook pro. I personally have the macbook pro and run ableton live suite 8 (massive music program), massive, logic pro, youtube, stupid games like ones on addicting games, iTunes, and more on that same macbook.

However, if you are a hard core gamer, go with alienware. They will not have anything as close as to the amount of things a macbook can do but it will always give you zero lag.

unfortunately both systems are painfully overpriced.
You should take the time to look at specs and also look at different company's offerings. Don't just stick with Dell or Apple. There are other companies out there.

wow.. this is quite the old topic to be resurrected... but the most important question is:
What are you going to use your computer for? writing? editing? etc etc.
